The baby, estimated to be about 24 to 48 hours old when she was found Friday, is in stable condition.

Investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are asking the child's mother to come forward in case she needs medical attention. Officials also are asking for help to provide a foster home for the baby.

Deputy Adam Collette helped dig the child out from beneath dirt and pieces of asphalt. The baby was swaddled in a blanket and cold to the touch.

"She was wrapped in what appears to be a hospital blanket, and her face was covered with the loose dirt," Collette said to The Associated Press.

Collette said doctors said the child might not have survived the night.

"I think the baby definitely had a touch of God that day," Collette said.
