Montana investigators believe they've found the body of a missing Oregon 2-year-old whose parents died in an apparent murder-suicide last week, authorities said Sunday.
Aiden Salcido was reported missing after the bodies of his parents, Daniel Salcido, 21, and Hannah Janiak, 24, were found Wednesday in Kalispell, Montana, according to the Oregonian.
The family had lived in Medford, Oregon, but were reported missing June 11 when Janiak did not show up to begin a jail sentence for a June 2018 burglary.
Update 8:40 p.m. EDT July 28: Montana authorities found the body of a child in a remote area where witnesses had reported seeing Hannah Janiak and Daniel Salcido before their deaths last week, the Oregonian reported.
The 2-year-old boy has not yet been positively identified, pending the results of an autopsy, according to the Associated Press reported.
Police in Medford, Oregon, said tips from the public were crucial in helping find a remote camp where it's believed the family had been living since fleeing Oregon.
Surveillance video from a Kalispell Walmart showed the couple on July 25, the same day they died, but the child was not with them, the AP reported.
Original story: Authorities in Oregon are trying to locate a 2-year-old boy whose parents police said were found dead Wednesday in an apparent murder-suicide in Montana.
Aiden Salcido is being sought by Medford Police, the Oregonian reported. The child's parents, Daniel Salcido, 21, and Hannah Janiak, 24, led police in Montana on a chase Wednesday night before police used a spike strip to stop the car near Kalispell, KPTV reported.
When police approached the green 1996 GMC Jimmy sport utility vehicle, they found the couple dead, the Oregonian reported. Police said they found Janiak with a gunshot wound to the head, and believe Daniel Salcido died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the newspaper reported.
Police said Aiden Salcido was not in the vehicle, and that there had been no evidence the child had been in it.
According to a police investigation, the couple was involved in a burglary in 2018, KTVL reported. They were convicted, and Janiak was scheduled to begin serving her sentence last month, the television station reported. Janiak did not show up at the Jackson County Jail on July 11, and the last purchases on her credit card were June 3 at a Walmart, when she bought camping equipment, KTVL reported.
Medford police reviewed surveillance video at the store, which showed Aiden Salcido with his parents, the Oregonian reported.
In a statement, Medford police officials said they are "greatly concerned for Aiden’s welfare” and are searching for him with the help of the FBI.
Anyone with information is asked to call 541-774-2258 and reference case 19-10842, KPTV reported.
