Amazon will allow 200 homeless people to live rent-free for a year on the site of its future Seattle headquarters.
Beginning Monday, Amazon is turning what used to be a motel into a temporary homeless shelter, according to the Seattle Times.
Amazon bought the property two years ago as part of a big downtown expansion plan, but construction is not set to start for another year.

In the meantime, Amazon will team up with Mary's Place, a nonprofit that helps homeless women and children, to house about 200 people in the former motel.
The goal is to run it as a shelter, free of charge, for up to 70 families. The company will pay for their utilities as well.
When construction on the Amazon project begins in 2017, the company plans to find another nearby building to serve the same mission.
The most recent count by King County says there are about 4,500 people living on the streets of Seattle.
