Residents in one Louisiana town could hardly believe what they were seeing when an alligator emerged from a storm drain and slithered onto the street.

The incident took place on Monday in Metairie, according to WWL. Witnesses said that the approximately 7-foot-long alligator lifted the grated storm drain cover to escape after heavy rains moved through the area.

The alligator's location was adjacent to an elementary school, but students were on spring break.

Wildlife professionals arrived on the scene to wrangle the alligator, which was feisty, according to video recorded at the scene.

The alligator was eventually secured and relocated.
