The company behind Oreo brand cookies announced the recall of two snack varieties on Friday after the company failed to list a possible allergen in the cookie ingredients.
Mondelez Global LLC is recalling its original and mint-flavored Oreo Fudge Cremes because it failed to note milk in their ingredients.
The company said the recall was "out of an abundance of caution," although Mondelez said one person has had an allergic reaction because of the mislabeled cookies.
"Consumers may be informed about the potential presence of milk by an allergen advisory statement already included on the label," Mondelez said in the recall notice, referring to a label that warns consumers that the cookies were "manufactured on equipment that processes milk."
"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction(s) if they consume this product," the company said.
The cookies were sold at stores nationwide.
The recalled products are:
- 11.3-ounce packages of original variety Oreo Fudge Cremes with UPC No. 0 44000 02694 3 and "best when used by" dates of Aug. 19, Aug. 20, Sept. 14, Oct. 13, Oct. 14 or Oct. 17
- 11.3-ounce packages of mint variety Oreo Fudge Cremes with UPC No. 0 44000 02696 7 and "best when used by" dates of Aug. 20, Aug. 21, Sept. 14, Sept. 15, Sept. 16, Oct. 17 and Oct. 18
Consumers with the reccalled products are asked to throw out the cookies and can contact the company at 1-855-535-5948.
