For one airline it's not just your luggage they will be checking---but also your weight, CNN reports.

Uzbekistan Airways released a statement announcing that passengers, along with their carry-on luggage, will be weighed on a scale to see how much weight they will be adding to the plane.

“According to the rules on International Air Transport Association, airlines are obliged to carry out the regular procedures of preflight control passengers weighing with hand baggage to observe requirements for ensuring flight safety,” the airline stated.

But IATA manager of corporate communications, Chris Goater, said to CNN that “we are not aware of an IATA rule concerning the weighing of the passengers and their hand luggage prior to flight.”

Uzbekistan Airlines stated that passengers will be weighed in the departure zones at airports, CNN reports.

“All airlines have policies in place for load calculations, weight and balance of their aircraft. These policies in turn are subject to the rules and regulations of their national aviation altogether,” Goater said to CNN.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency also have certain formulas “to calculate the average weight passengers are adding to a plane,” CNN reports. The FAA uses guidelines for weight distribution, such as setting an individual passenger average of 195-199 pounds for adults and 82 pounds for children.

There is no information on Uzbekistan Airway’s specific rules and whether overweight passengers will face penalties.
