During a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act Tuesday, congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle held hands and sang “We Shall Overcome.”
Surely, all the fine representatives and senators were sincere in their respect for the anniversary and in the presentation of a Congressional Gold Medal honoring the late Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and his widow, both of whom played pivotal roles in passing the Civil Rights Act.
But the handholding part? And the swaying-and-singing-together part? From some of their expressions, it looked as if the group had been made to suck on lemons before and during the rare show of solidarity.
