Demonstrators who drew national attention last year for fasting on the National Mall in support of a congressional overhaul of the immigration system are preparing to bring their campaign to Atlanta Wednesday.
Among them is Eliseo Medina, a former international secretary-treasurer of the Service Employees International Union. He is part of the “Fast for Families Across America” campaign that is touring congressional districts nationwide.
The demonstrators are planning to bring attention to their cause during a 3 p.m. visit to The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change Atlanta Wednesday. Two hours later, they will join a rally with supporters at Plaza Fiesta, 4166 Buford Highway NE in Atlanta.
Meanwhile, civil and immigrant rights groups that are calling for congressional action are preparing to walk on April 5 from the state Capitol to the downtown Spring Street offices of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Activists locked themselves to the gates outside that building in November as part of a demonstration against the Obama administration's immigration enforcement policies.
Bipartisan immigration overhaul legislation remains stalled in Congress amid opposition in the Republican-led House. Conservatives opposed to moving forward with the legislation say they are distrustful that the Obama administration would faithfully carry it out.
