A crash on a South Carolina highway Thursday night left two people dead and sent four others to the hospital, according to reports.

The accident happened about 6:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 123 near Cartee Road in Pickens County, WYFF News 4 reported, which cited the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A 2011 Ford Fiesta and 2013 Dodge Ram pickup were traveling in the southbound lanes near U.S. 178 when the truck ran into the back of the car, WSPA News 7 reported.

Police said the Fiesta lost control and went off the road, flipped several times then came to rest in some woods, according to WYFF.

Two people, including the driver, were thrown from the car and died at the scene, WSPA reported.

Three other passengers in the car were taken to the hospital along with the driver of the truck, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The deceased have not yet been identified.

Police also have not indicated whether alcohol consumption or other circumstances were factors in the crash.

Highway 123 runs nearly parallel to Interstate 85 and extends from Greenville, South Carolina, into Toccoa, in Northeast Georgia.

An investigation into the crash is continuing.
