UPDATE: Warrants have been obtained for aggravated assault and felony murder for Rodney Kimsey, Gwinnett police told Channel 2 Action News. He's still under guard at a hospital.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Gwinnett County police this morning are investigating a fatal shooting at a home in the Hoschton community.

Officers responded to the 4200 block of Platinum Court about 4:35 a.m. after a 13-year-old girl called 911 to report that her mother had been shot, Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith said.

“Upon arrival, officers encountered an adult male acting erratically outside, a few houses away from the incident location,” Smith said in an email. “Officers took that subject into custody and additional officers proceeded to the incident location.”

When officers entered the home, they found 30-year-old Melissa Kimsey dead with multiple gunshot wounds, Smith said.

“The 13-year-old daughter was not injured,” he said.

Smith said the man who was detained several houses away was Rodney Kimsey, 31, the husband of the victim and the father of the 13-year-old caller.

“He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and will remain in police custody upon his release,” Smith said. “This subject is the primary suspect in this case.”

He said officers recovered a weapon at the scene.

Neighbor Dave Driscoll said he knew the family very well.

“They’ve been here about eight years,” said Driscoll, who has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years.

“He was on the homeowner’s association board at one time and spent a lot of time working on his home,” Driscoll said of his neighbor.

“It’s very sad,” he added. “Very sad for his daughter and very sad for the neighborhood.”
