Three leaders of Morehouse College, a historically black college in Atlanta, released a statement in response to the Tyre Nichols and Memphis police videos.

President David Thomas, Chief of Police Charles Prescott and Student Government Association President Mark Nichols called for justice against the five officers involved in the incident. They also called for peaceful protests in the wake of the video’s release.

“It would be a disservice to the rich history of our institution to dispute the importance of allowing your voice to be heard in turbulent times,” the joint statement said. “However, we three are charging our Morehouse community to handle this situation in the same nature as our beloved brother Dr. King. If you should protest, as is your American right, please do so safely, peacefully, and with a spirit of dignity that our ancestors upheld.”
