If you were wondering when Atlanta would finally turn on the summer heat, look no further than this week’s forecast.

The final days of summer vacation for thousands of metro Atlanta students are coinciding with some of the hottest weather the region has seen all year. Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Atlanta will break 90 degrees every day this week.

“All the heat that’s been stuck out west all summer, it’s building to the east,” he said. “You are really going to feel it by the middle and end of the week.”

In a normal year, Atlanta typically records 47 days in the 90s. So far this year, it has only recorded 11, according to Channel 2. Those 90-degree days are just starting to stack up, and Monday with its projected high of 91 will be the fifth in a row.

The city is already warm to start the day with temperatures in the upper 70s. Monahan said Monday will be a good day for the pool, if you don’t mind dodging a few showers and storms.

Rain is 40% likely ahead of a week cold front, he said, but a few scattered downpours later in the day will not amount to a washout.

“Over the weekend we managed to get a decent amount of sunshine, and we’ll still have that today, even though the rain chances are going to inch up just a little bit,” Monahan said.

Tuesday will be the wettest and cloudiest day this week with a 60% chance of rain, according to Channel 2. The cold front triggering showers Monday will sit across the region Tuesday, Monahan said, producing another round of showers and storms.

“We’re at 90 tomorrow, so still hot, but more clouds and more storms around Tuesday,” he said. “By Thursday we start to really warm up. Dry, sunny, mid- to upper 90s for highs.”

Monahan said he would not be surprised if some neighborhoods recorded temperatures near 100 degrees by the weekend.

Pavement is dry Monday morning, but there is another kind of road hazard causing an early jam for commuters out of Marietta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Debris on I-75 South has left at least a dozen vehicles with flat tires just before the South Marietta Parkway loop, the Traffic Center reported. As a result, the trip time is climbing quickly out of Kennesaw.

The Traffic Center suggests commuters take the express lanes out of the northwest suburbs, or use Cobb Parkway to get to I-285.
