A Douglas County mother is accused of starving her 6-week old baby, according to police.
Jamie Lynn Bentley, 33, of Lithia Springs, remained Monday night in the Douglas County jail, where she is being held without bond on a felony cruelty to children charge.
Bentley allegedly failed to feed the newborn, causing him to lose 2 pounds in the weeks after his birth, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report. The child was hospitalized for more than a week so he could be nourished, the report states.
Bentley, a mother of eight, fed her baby only two ounces of formula every six hours from the time he was born, the Douglas County Sentinel reported. Douglas County Assistant District Attorney Kristi Wilson told the courtroom Friday that the Division of Family and Children Services had been involved with the case since the child was born due to suspicions that Bentley abused drugs, the newspaper reported.
“It (the baby) was skin and bones,” Wilson said. “Certain people have seen the pictures and that’s what it was. They couldn’t even recognize it was a baby in the pictures. The state is adamant that her bond should be denied. Certainly we feel she is a risk of re-offending.”
Bentley denied the allegations in court, according to the report.
