A 10-year-old student at a Milwaukee school was injured by debris when a janitor's gun accidentally discharged earlier this month, WISN reported.
The girl, who attends St. Josaphat’s Parish School, was injured April 5, but Milwaukee police were not called about incident until April 17, the television station reported.
Through a niece who acted as a translator, the girl's mother told WISN the bullet did not hit the child, but she was hit by debris.
"She says it was a nail that had come out from the air conditioning that wasn't on right," the niece told the television station. "That's what came flying out and hit her."
According to the girl's mother, the bullet ricocheted off one wall and caused debris to scatter, WISN reported. She said school officials did not mention the gun until 12 days after the incident, when she was asked to speak to police.
School officials said guns are not allowed on campus and the janitor was fired, WISN reported. The janitor has not been charged with a crime, the television station reported.
