As part of the Navy's annual Ice Excercise (ICEX 2016), sailors and civilians undergo five weeks of research, testing and evaluation of conditions in the Arctic region.

Navy sailors clear debris and manage to bring the entire, 362-foot USS Hartford submarine through a sheet of ice.

The video shows part of the vessel come to surface, before the entire body begins to shatter the ice.

Once several crew members clear the ice from the hatches, they head inside the USS Hartford.

Submarines have been conducting under-ice operations in the Arctic for more than 50 years, according to the Navy.
