A 31-year-old New Jersey man survived a nine-story plunge from a high-rise in which he crashed through the roof of a parked BMW, according to reports.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at 26 Journal Square in Jersey City after the unidentified man jumped or fell from an open window on the ninth floor, The New York Post reported. He was later transported to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition Thursday, according to Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione.

Witnesses said the man stood up after the roughly 100-foot fall and asked “What happened?”

One woman said it was apparent that the man’s arm was broken.

“I heard a big boom and I didn’t think it was a person at first,” said bystander Christina Smith, according to the Post. “The back window of the car just busted out — exploded. Then the guy jumped up and started screaming. His arm was all twisted.”

Smith said she called 911 and then took photos at the scene while other concerned bystanders urged the man not to move after he climbed off the wreckage of the car and fell to the ground, the Post reported.

After emergency personnel arrived, the severely injured man refused to cooperate with authorities and would not give his name. He was not an employee of the building and it was unclear whether he had been visiting with someone there, according to the Post.

Police were investigating but did not suspect anyone had pushed the man out the window, the Post reported.

The building, owned by Kushner Companies, is considered the first skyscraper in Jersey City. Built in 1928, it rises 180 feet, has 15 floors and once housed the original headquarters of the Labor National Bank. Today the building has been renovated and is “home to locally-based companies and retailers,” according to an overview of the property on the Kushner website.
