A man was shot by police after pointing a gun at an officer during a domestic dispute Friday evening at a Gwinnett County apartment complex, authorities said.

The officer-involved shooting occurred in the Elevate at Jackson Creek apartments off Jimmy Carter Boulevard near Norcross about 11 p.m., Gwinnett police said.

According to the GBI, officers were called to the complex after a neighbor reported hearing a woman screaming inside the apartment.

The officer heard the man and woman fighting as he approached their unit, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Kathleen Adams said Saturday. When the woman opened the front door, the officer saw her struggling with an armed man.

“The male presented the firearm towards the officer, who was able to grab the female to safety and fire his weapon,” she said. Neither the officer nor the woman were injured.

The suspect, later identified as 47-year-old Ramon Guillen, slammed the front door after getting shot, authorities said. Gwinnett’s SWAT team was called to the apartment complex to get him out, but Guillen was gone by the time police entered the home, Adams said.

About 2:40 a.m., officers were informed that Guillen showed up at Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the GBI. The Norcross man was later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Guillen faces one count of false imprisonment and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the GBI. It is the 57th such shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate this year, agency spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
