A Norcross man was killed in a wreck that occurred around daybreak Saturday on I-285 in Sandy Springs.

Gerald D. Wallace, 36, died when his car hit a tractor-trailer around 7 a.m. on I-285 westbound between Glenridge and Roswell roads, Sandy Springs police spokesman Steve Rose said.

The tractor-trailer had slowed because of a car bumper obstructing the roadway.

“The bumper apparently dislodged from another vehicle, driven by 45-year old Ruben Vega, who struck the retaining wall just prior to this accident,” Rose said.

Witnesses told police Wallace was driving at a high rate of speed before the impact, Rose said.

Vega has been charged with a lane violation and second-degree vehicular homicide. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not charged, Rose said.

Four westbound lanes were closed for most of the morning, but all lanes were reopened by 11 a.m.
