A 61-year-old man was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a man at a southwest Atlanta apartment complex early Tuesday, police said.

Officers were sent to the Santa Fe Villas in the 2300 block of Metropolitan Parkway after receiving a report of a person down just before 1 a.m., Atlanta police said in a statement. When they arrived, they found the victim with a stab wound to the chest.

The man, who was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 40-year-old Charles Forbus of Atlanta, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the fatal incident might have been the result of an argument with a neighbor. The neighbor was detained for questioning and later arrested, police said Tuesday afternoon.

Gary Lee Hawes was charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, according to police. He was taken to the Fulton County jail.

Donald Trump's administration deployed the military to Washington, D.C., in the name of fighting crime, and in an Aug. 11 news conference he mentioned the possibility of military being sent to other large American cities, all of which are led by Black, Democratic mayors. And while Atlanta wasn't included in Trump's list, the city fits that profile under Mayor Andre Dickens. (Photo Illustration: Philip Robibero / AJC | Source: Getty)
