A Gwinnett County man was arrested Friday for allegedly causing a fiery, chain-reaction wreck that killed two people last month on I-75 near Kennesaw.

Vahid Husic, 40, of Lawrenceville, was charged with two counts of first degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving and following too closely and was being held Friday night without bond in the Cobb County jail, booking records show.

Investigators believe Husic was driving a tractor-trailer northbound on I-75 on Nov. 14 when he struck the back of a 2006 BMW X5, setting off the crash that killed two people and injured five others.

The massive wreck sent flames and billowing smoke into the air near Kennesaw and stretched across all four northbound lanes of I-75 and emergency lanes on both sides of the interstate, according police. All northbound lanes were temporarily closed after the wreck.

Husic was not seriously injured in the wreck. But the BMW’s driver,Gregory Alan Millsaps, 47, of Marietta, died at the scene of the wreck when his SUV was engulfed in flames, Officer Mike Bowman with Cobb County police previously said. Barbara Phenicie, 71, of Peachtree City, also died from injuries sustained in the wreck, police said.

Five others were transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with injuries, according to police.

Millsaps was a married father of one and the state director for two softball organizations, according to his online obituary. Phenicie was a longtime teacher's aid and an elder and deacon at her church. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, three children, and numerous other relatives, her obituary states.

The crash remained under investigation in recent weeks before an arrest warrant was issued for Husic.
