After videos of a man visiting numerous homes sparked concern that a police impersonator was roaming Clayton County, the police department is trying to assure residents that he’s the real deal.
Images of the man first appeared on social media Saturday, Clayton police Chief Kevin Roberts said in a statement. Photos and videos captured by a resident’s doorbell camera show the man knocking on doors.
The person who posted the video questioned if the man was really a cop and said there was no record of an officer coming to their home.
“When we reviewed the video, we noticed the male depicted in the video is in fact a Clayton County police officer,” the agency said in a tweet Monday.
Authorities said the officer was in the area working to locate a missing child.
“As a result, he was knocking on every door to see if anyone had seen the child,” police said. The agency stated the officer was wearing his department-issued raincoat, which covered his identification patches.
“We appreciate the concern and the attention to detail from our citizens,” Clayton police said. “Rest assured he is one of ours and you were not in harm’s way.”
