DeKalb County interstates have been struck with road rage this week, as a second man was arrested Friday afternoon after pointing a gun at a driver on I-285 in southeast Atlanta.

Kevin Lamon Ware Smith of Avondale Estates was arrested just a few hours after the incident and has been charged with simple assault, aggressive driving and pointing a gun.

Around 1:30 p.m., Smith was driving on the Perimeter near Moreland Avenue when another driver “accidentally cut him off,” DeKalb police said. Smith then pointed a gun at the driver but did not fire, according to police spokeswoman Michaela Vincent.

The victim was able to give police a description of the vehicle and that led to the arrest, Vincent said.

Officers have investigated more than 80 suspected road-rage shootings this year in DeKalb, according to data released to Channel 2 Action News. Although Friday’s incident did not end in gunfire, road rage throughout metro Atlanta continues to increase.

Friday’s incident was the second reported in DeKalb this week. On Wednesday, a man fired his gun at another driver on I-20 near Panola Road, according to police.

Officers were quickly able to arrest Wleh Nimely of Lithonia in connection with the shooting and he was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon. No injuries were reported.

Nimely was released on bond from the DeKalb County Jail on Friday.
