Clarkston police have opened a homicide investigation after an apartment maintenance worker found a body Monday.

The discovery was made around 2:30 p.m. at the Highland Village Apartments on Ponce de Leon Avenue, according to police. The worker told police he found the victim dead inside his own apartment, and he had been shot at least once.

The victim was identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office as 32-year-old Laron Benjamin of Clarkston.

A spokesman for Clarkston police confirmed that his death is considered a homicide but released no other details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Last month, a shooting at another apartment complex in the city left a man critically injured. The victim was inside his residence at the Silver Oak Apartments on Brockett Road when he was shot in the head, and investigators discovered several shell casings outside an adjacent building.

He survived the shooting, spokesman Sgt. Garfield Trumble said Tuesday.

Police were investigating several possibilities in that case, including that the man may have been struck by a stray bullet. No suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information on either of the recent shootings is asked to come forward. Tipsters are asked to call Clarkston police at 404-292-9465.
