A free meal is too good to be true.

However, when Pita Mediterranean Street Food opens the doors to its new spot in The Avenue at West Cobb on Friday, free food is on the menu.

But expect an appetizer of at least an hourlong wait.

Mike Carino, spokesman for the franchise, said it’s tradition to offer a free meal to the community when they open a store.

“A lot of our fan base comes from all over the city to show their support,” he said. “It’s a sense of gratitude.”

At a few of these openings they’ve held recently, including the new location in Smyrna, between 400 and 500 people have shown up, Carino said.

He said they decided to come to this side of the county after hearing from customers and seeing the response at Taste of West Cobb last year.

Carino also explained how the free food works: You get to chose from their three bestsellers — classic gyros, chicken gyro and falafel pita — and get your choice of a side and a drink. See their full menu here.

The company started in Peachtree City in 2011. This new location makes 12 in metro Atlanta and three storefronts in Cobb. They also have plans for another inside the food market possibly coming to Marietta Square.

Carino said the free food will be served from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the restaurant will open for its regular hours, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the next day.
