19-year-old charged with Gwinnett County hit and run
A 19-year-old woman was in the Gwinnett County jail Thursday night on charges she crashed her car into a school bus carrying special-needs students and then drove off.
According to jail records, Jami Michelle Marengo is charged with making a false statement, filing a false report, hit and run, failure to maintain a lane and obstruction. She also is charged with violating probation, so no bond was set.
According to Channel 2 Action News, police said Marengo was “holding a cell phone in front of her face” when she crashed into a mailbox on Millwater Crossing in Dacula and then into the bus. The five children on the bus and the driver were not seriously injured in the Oct. 29 crash.
Rather than stopping, police said, Marengo drove to a fast-food restaurant on Hamilton Mill Road, parked her car and then reported it stolen.
A warrant for her arrest was issued earlier this week, according to WSB-TV.
