A woman's body was found after an apartment fire Tuesday night in Lawrenceville, an official said.

Firefighters arrived at the single-story unit in the 700 block of Longleaf Drive SW around 7:45 p.m.

A neighbor told authorities that a person may have been trapped, and witnesses reported smoke, flames and an alarm going off, Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. A neighbor had doused the fire just inside the door with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived, he said.

Firefighters found a deceased adult female in her 50s, believed to be the resident, in a chair near the front door of the living room, Rutledge said. The woman, who had apparent burn injuries, was the only person in the apartment.

The Gwinnett County medical examiner will determine her cause of death.

The woman's name has not been released, pending identification of the body and notification of next of kin.

The cause of the fire, which was contained to the chair in the living room, is under investigation, Rutledge said.
