A woman found dead in a demolished building was alive when workers started tearing down the walls of a house on Daniel Street, the Fulton Medical Examiner's Office said Monday.

"She was alive and died from injuries sustained in the demolition of the building," investigator Mary Beth Hauptle told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Hauptle said the death has been classified as accidental.

The woman's body was found Saturday inside the house near Oakland Cemetery as workers were using a backhoe to rip up the house.

Neighbors said they heard someone cry for help and moments later they heard someone moan from underneath the debris. They said homeless people often slept in the house near Boulevard and Decatur Street, and they suspect that was why she was inside.

The woman still had not been identified Monday. That process could be lengthy if she was homeless, Hauptle said.
