Woman arrested for leaving infant, toddler in car

A woman who left her infant and 2-year-old in a car so she could pay a traffic ticket Thursday is now in the Gwinnett County Jail for reckless conduct charges.

Elizabeth Bell, 25, told a Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputy that her two children were sleeping and she didn’t want to wake them while she went into the Gwinnett County Court Annex to pay a traffic citation.

Bell was arrested after a Department of Family and Children’s Services worker reported finding two small children left alone in a car outside the Gwinnett County Court Annex Building, the sheriff’s department said.

A Gwinnett Sheriff’s deputy found the children – a 7-week old baby and a 2-year-old in a black Lexus sedan, according to the sheriff’s department. The car’s engine was off, and one window was rolled down about 2 inches, the sheriff’s department said.

Bell told deputies that the car was out of gas. She said she was in the county building for about 30 minutes.

The children were released to Bell's sister, the sheriff's department said.

Bell's bond has been set at $2,400, according to jail records.
