A former leader of a Douglasville Girl Scout troop has been accused of stealing more than $9,000 from the group, Channel 2 Action News reported Wednesday.
Darlene Jo Lewis, 49, of Villa Rica was arrested Friday and charged with felony theft by taking, police said. She is free on bond.
Lewis allegedly tapped into Troop 798’s cash to pay for things including gas, food and a dating service. She was treasurer for the troop between 2010 and 2012, according to the Douglas County Sentinel.
“She had a PayPal account hooked to the debit card and was just making her own personal purchases off of the troop account,” Douglasville police Sgt. Todd Garner told Channel 2.
A new troop leader contacted police after noticing financial irregularities.
The troop shut down after the theft was discovered, Capt. J.R. Davidson told the Sentinel.
