A reader wrote in last week to ask:

When does the new addition to Rock Springs Park open?

Some background: In May 2016, Gwinnett County approved $5.9 million in SPLOST funds for a bunch of new additions to Rock Springs Park in Lawrenceville. The plan included a new entrance, soccer fields, a building for concessions and restrooms, a playground, dog parks, new trail connections and 240 new parking spaces.

Last August, work was already underway on the project, and county officials said the work should be done by summer of this year.

Summer has rolled around, and the wait is (almost) over for all those new features. Everything except the new soccer fields is officially open as of today, Aug. 11, according to Grant Guess, director of Parks and Recreation Project Administration.

Now you can enjoy two dog parks — one for small dogs and one for large ones — and take your pooch for a walk on some of the new trail connections. There’s a 20-by-34-foot open shelter, a new playground and that building with concessions and restrooms, all open to the public.

The soccer fields are expected to be open by spring 2018, Guess said. The sod needs more time to grow “sufficient roots to survive regular play.”
