Duluth City Council approved the purchase of new license plate cameras in a Dec. 11 meeting, meaning 12 of the devices will be installed around town next year.

But what exactly are the cameras looking for? And, most importantly, will they give you a speeding ticket? The Duluth Police Department has provided some answers.

Where will the cameras be installed?
The locations have not yet been determined, according to Officer Ted Sadowski, a department spokesman, though they will be on "major thoroughfares" throughout the city.

When will they be installed?
The plan is for the 12 cameras to be installed in mid-February.

Are these cameras going to give you tickets for speeding or running a red light?
No, but you shouldn't be doing either of those things anyway!

So what are these cameras going to be doing, then?
The cameras will be capturing license plates, looking for stolen vehicles and wanted persons.

“These cameras will be linked to officers throughout the city and [officers] will be notified whenever a stolen vehicle or wanted person comes into the city,” Sadowski said.

The cameras can capture 100 images per second, and are able to perform at any time of day and in any weather condition, Sadowski said.
