Authorities say part of a 212-year-old home, one of Georgia's oldest surviving houses, has collapsed.

Erick Montgomery, executive director of Historic Augusta Inc., says part of a wall at the Goodale House collapsed Friday. Montgomery tells the Augusta Chronicle  that he hopes the structure can be restored.

Authorities say the home was built in 1799 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It has also been known as the Fitzsimmons-Hampton House.

The Chronicle reports that it was purchased in 2009 by Birmingham investor Wes Sims who at the time hoped to renovate the structure. Sims could not be reached Friday.

The surrounding area was once a 500-acre plantation established by Thomas Goodale in 1740.
