No charges are expected for the driver who struck a man trying to cross a busy Cobb County road, Marietta police said Saturday.

The man, whose name was not released, died during surgery after he was hit by a SUV on South Marietta Parkway in Marietta around 4:40 p.m. Friday, Marietta police Officer Michael Gardner told the AJC.

The man was attempting to cross the street from the CCT transfer station when he was struck, near the intersection with Aviation Road in front of the RaceTrac gas station, Gardner said. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

The man was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, where he later died, Gardner said.

The driver, Janice Bird, 63, of Marietta, stopped after hitting the man, police said. Bird is not expected to be charged.
