Vandalism was to blame for more than 4,600 gallons of sewage spilling into a Gwinnett County creek over the weekend, officials said.

The spill was reported Saturday at a manhole on the 4800 block of Highland Avenue, not far from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Sugar Hill. According to information released by the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources:

"The main cause was determined to be vandalism, with a secondary cause of debris.  The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources (DWR) was notified at 4:24 p.m. and the overflow was stopped at 5:40 p.m.  The spill was approximately 4,655 gallons in volume and entered Level Creek."

Water resources employees raked the area and spread lime, officials said. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified.

No further information was provided about the alleged vandalism.
