Union City announces Flat Shoals Road crossing closure
Union City’s public safety department has announced that CSX will be closing the crossing at Flat Shoals Road next week. The railroad will be working on the train crossing point June 6 through 10 for track maintenance. The detour is Shannon Parkway to Beverley Engram Parkway, or State Road 138 to Northwest Broad Street, or State Road 29.
In addition to giving updates on scheduled railroad maintenance, the railroad also reminds the public to stay safe around train tracks.
- CSX offers important tips for staying safe around railroad tracks:
- Freight trains do not follow set schedules. A train could come by at any time and from any direction.
- Be aware that trains cannot stop quickly. A freight train moving at 55 miles per hour can take a mile or more to stop (the equivalent to 18 football fields) once the emergency brakes are applied.
- Never walk along railroad tracks. Remember that trains are wider than the tracks and can overhang the tracks by up to three feet on either side.
- Never wear headphones or text while near railroad tracks. Modern trains are quieter than most people expect.
- Never race a train to a highway-rail crossing. Even if you tie, you lose.
- Never drive around lowered gates. It's illegal and deadly.
