Police continued Tuesday to canvass the area where a University of Georgia student was assaulted Monday on her way to class.

Investigators were out before daylight at the Fairfax Hall Apartments on South Milledge Avenue.

At 7:30 a.m. Monday, a 22-year-old student was cutting through the complex to her bus stop when she was tackled from behind by a man who began to remove her clothes, police said.

A resident interrupted the assault.

"The attack happened not far from his door," Athens-Clarke Police Capt. Clarence Holeman told the AJC. "He heard the screaming and came out to see what was going on. The attack stopped as soon as he came out. Then he chased the suspect but lost sight of him."

The suspect ran toward Milledge Avenue and the Ga. 10 loop bypass, police said.

Holeman called the attack "very bold" because it occurred in plain view at a busy time.

Police continue to scour the area for leads.

"We're out canvassing the area this morning," Holeman said. "We're checking nearby businesses, anywhere where the guy might have gone that might have video."

UGA police sent out an alert because the attack happened close to campus housing. In addition, some students live in Fairfax Hall and nearby apartments.

Police gave this description of the suspect: a neatly dressed, light-skinned black man in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5-foot-8, 200 pounds. He had a shaved head and wore a tan plaid button-up shirt and khaki pants.
