Emory Wegener might be listed on the University of Georgia’s women’s soccer roster at just 5-foot-7, but she plays a big game.
A native of Johns Creek and a graduate of St. Pius X Catholic, Wegener was named SEC Freshman of the Week for her recent play as the Bulldogs’ goalkeeper. In a win over Arkansas last Thursday, her first SEC game, Wegener tallied five saves in a 3-1 victory.
She was just a few minutes away from a clean sheet, but a late penalty kick from the Razorbacks escaped her grasp.
Wegener has started all nine games for the Bulldogs this season, leading the SEC with 44 saves. She has also notched three shutouts, against San Diego, Virginia Tech and Georgia State.
At St. Pius X Catholic, Wegener won three GHSA AAAA state championships. Wegener decided to go to Georgia over Villanova.
The Bulldogs are 4-3-2 overall all this season. They will face Missouri at home on Thursday.
