Tsunami warning prompts Atlanta native to check up on former baseball teammates in Hawaii
Raven Jackson started thinking about his former baseball teammates in Hawaii when officials warned a tsunami may hit.
They all played together at Chicago State University from 2003-2005. Jackson said many of his teammates were Hawaiian and returned there after school.
Jackson was on Facebook earlier today when he saw a note from one of his teammates, catcher Aaron Moises, saying that a tsunami was on its way.
“He’s at work,” said Jackson. “He works early in the morning, so he was just giving us those updates on Facebook.”
He’s trying to check up on his other former teammates -- the second baseman, an outfielder and another catcher -- as well.
“It’s getting kind of hectic, but everything is under control,” Jackson said Moises told him.
Jackson, 26, is an Atlanta native who just moved to Baltimore a week ago. The former first baseman told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he was listening to the radio broadcasts from Hawaii for updates.
“It sounds like they are just carrying on as usual, but I will stay in touch with them just to make sure everything is OK.”
Others who contacted the AJC Saturday afternoon reported a “no panic” attitude as well.
Terri Massimi said her sister is temporarily moving their family to the top floor of a six-floor condo.
“Nobody is panicking, but everybody has gotten their (important) papers together, and they’ve moved their car to higher ground,” said Massimi, whose sister lives in a condo on the beach in Kihai.
“If they tell them to move, then they will definitely move … but they are just waiting it out right now.”
