A traffic stop for littering after a cigarette was tossed out of a car window led to the arrests of two men on charges they used fake driver’s licenses and fake checks to buy electronics, according to Woodstock police.

The driver, Brian Byrd, allegedly claimed not to have his license with him and tried to pass himself off as Christopher Irirary. But in the car, the officer found a North Carolina identification card that had Byrd’s picture and the name Kerk Martinez. Also in the car were checks with the Kerk Martinez name on them.

Woodstock police spokeswoman Brittany Duncan said a search of the car after the Friday stop also turned up checks and an Indiana driver’s license with with Byrd’s phone number and the name Steven Wright.

There were checks for large sums of money bearing the name of the passenger, Jamel Williams, police said.

The officer also found a camera, a laptop, router, telephones and other electronics and receipts indicating that the fake checks were used for those purchases, according to police.

Byrd, 24, from Norcross, and Williams, 21, from Durham, N.C., are being held in the Cherokee County jail.

Williams and Byrd are both charged with forgery; Byrd also is charged with driving without a license, giving a false name, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and littering.
