ORIGINAL STORY: With no jackpot winner since Jan. 9, the Mega Millions lottery keeps hitting new milestones.
The top prize for Friday night’s drawing is $521 million, just the fourth time this lottery has topped $500 million.
It’s also the 10th largest prize ever offered in the United States, including Powerball, officials said.
“Large jackpots like this one capture everyone’s attention,” said Gordon Medenica, Mega Millions’ lead director, “and it would be great to see the roll go on for a while longer. But at the same time, we can’t wait to see someone win.”
If someone wins Friday, there are two ways to take the prize. There’s the annuity option, with one immediate payment followed by 29 annual graduated payments. Or there’s the cash option, which is about $317 million.
The drawing can be seen at 11 p.m., right before the Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat.
