Q: I read in the AJC about the 54-year-old veterinarian from Peachtree City who is headed to Afghanistan to care for military dogs. How many military dogs have been killed in action during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars?

-- Jerry Schwartz, Alpharetta

A: Ron Aiello, president of the United States War Dogs Association (www.uswardogs.org), told Q&A on the News the Department of Defense won't provide specific numbers, but his research puts the total between 30 and 40 military dogs killed in action in eight years of war in the Middle East. "The dogs and their handlers are doing an outstanding job of detection" of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Aiello said. As a member of the U.S. Army Veterinary Service Reserve, Ray Rudd, who opened Braelinn Village Animal Hospital with wife Mary Kay in 1995, will be tending to military dogs struck by gunfire or maimed in explosions.

Q: The Atlanta Braves have several different colors and styles of uniforms that they wear for home and away baseball games. What determines which uniforms they wear, and who makes the decision?

-- Killian Smith, Decatur

A: The Braves wear their white uniforms for home games, except on Sundays, when they wear their red jerseys, Brad Hainje, the team's director of media relations, told Q&A on the News in an e-mail. There are two combinations for road games -- the gray jersey with gray pants or the blue jersey with gray pants. "Generally, that day's starting pitcher makes the decision. If he has no favorite, then manager [Bobby Cox] decides," Hainje said.
