Q&A on the News

Q: The relatively early cold snap reminded me of Thanksgiving in 1950. Thanksgiving Day was sunny and relatively warm; the next morning, however, the temperature had dropped to single digits. How cold was it? And was that a record-setting low temperature?

—Sarah Cooper, Gainesville

A: Yes, your memory is correct. The temperatures on Nov. 25, 1950, were extreme and they set a record for low temperatures for that date in Georgia, according to the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Peachtree City. Atlanta saw a low temperature of 3 degrees, Athens recorded a low of 7 degrees, and Columbus and Macon experienced lows of 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service website.

Q: When the Georgia football team travels to Auburn to play every other year, does the team fly into a nearby airport, the Auburn airport or does it take I-85 like everybody else from Atlanta? Also, where do the Bulldogs stay the night prior to the game?

—Ben Wiechman, Lawrenceville

A: The Georgia football team buses to the Auburn game, leaving on Friday afternoon, athletic department spokesman Claude Felton told Q&A on the News in an e-mail. The Bulldogs stay the night in a hotel in Columbus and drive to Auburn the day of the game. The team "buses back to Athens right after the game — right along with all the fans," he wrote. Georgia has played 26 games at Auburn, compiling a 14-10-2 record, including this year's 49-31 loss. The rivalry has alternated between Athens and Auburn since 1959, but games also have been played in Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, Columbus and Montgomery, Ala.
