Q&A on the News

Q: I read that the new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will have 12 gates. Since Concourse E has about 37 gates, how will the new terminal handle all of the international flights?

-- Richard H. Siegel, Atlanta

A: The 12-gate facility will connect via the Automated People Mover System to the existing 28-gate international Concourse E, creating a 40-gate international air travel complex. The gate numbers, which reach up to E37, don't reflect the total number of gates on Concourse E.

Q: A recent Q&A stated that under Georgia law, regulated electric utilities are not permitted to earn a profit on fuel costs. Atlanta Gas Light used to state on their monthly bills that none of the “purchased gas cost” on the bill was retained by the company. Were they also bound by law, and if so, when was it changed?

-- Roger Abbott, Dunwoody

A: Just like the electric utilities, regulated natural gas utilities do not earn a profit on the price of gas, according to Georgia law. However, with the passage of Georgia's natural gas deregulation law in 1997, Atlanta Gas Light no longer sells gas, but is now a "pipes only" company, said Bill Edge, spokesman for the Georgia Public Service Commission. In the deregulated market within the AGL territory, the price at which marketers can sell gas to residential and commercial customers is no longer regulated by the commission.
