Q: Concerning the full body scans at the airports, how does that affect people with hip and knee replacements and pacemakers?

-- Linda Sherrer, Loganville

A: The Transportation Security Administration Web site says the advanced imaging technology is safe to use for all travelers, including those with pacemakers and joint replacements. It says, "Passengers with joint replacements or other medical devices that would regularly alarm a metal detector often prefer this technology because it is quicker and less invasive than a pat down." As always, the TSA encourages travelers with pacemakers to carry their pacemaker identification card and show it to the security officers.
