A man who was arrested after leading Roswell police on a chase early Friday slipped from his handcuffs and stole a police cruiser, then led officers on a second chase before wrecking the patrol car in Gwinnett County, police said.
The first chase began during a traffic stop in an office park on Ga. 140 at Old Dogwood Road, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The suspect “takes off” and drove through the parking lots of hotels in the area before spinning out near the intersection of Ga. 140 and Ga. 9 and getting out and running, Roswell police Lt. James McGee said.
Officers caught the suspect, shot him with a stun gun, handcuffed him and put him in the back of a patrol car, Channel 2 reported.
“They see him get up from the back seat into the front seat of the sergeant’s car, and he takes off,” McGee told Channel 2. “He jumps the curb, and one of the lieutenants said, ‘all I could see was our patrol car going airborne.’”
Officers chased the suspect into Gwinnett County before he wrecked the stolen patrol car near Peachtree Industrial and Jimmy Carter boulevards.
Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No officers were injured.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, is facing multiple charges from the chases as well as drug charges.
