Suspect caught after watery escape attempt in Forsyth
You can’t swim away from the law in Forsyth County.
Sheriff’s deputies said they were called to a fight between a Cumming-area man and his girlfriend Monday, and said suspect Kip Smith promptly fled in a vehicle, refusing to allow his girlfriend to get out.
Deputies eventually blocked his wheels after a pursuit and said Smith jumped through the passenger window, plunged into nearby Lake Lanier and tried to flee by swimming down Young Deer Creek.
Deputies kept Smith in sight from the shore, and he surrendered before backup units arrived.
Smith was being held in the Forsyth County Detention Center and faces a long list of charges including kidnapping, simple assault, criminal damage to property and obstruction of law enforcement officers.
