Skies will be sunny over metro Atlanta Wednesday, but a lot of rain is forecast later in the work week and into the first part of the weekend.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said the rain should move into metro Atlanta by around 8 p.m. Thursday, “and will stick around for a while.”
The chance of rain is 60 percent Thursday evening, 90 percent Friday and 60 percent Saturday, Nitz said.
Sunday should be sunny, but another round of rain is expected on Monday.
Nitz said as much as 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall across the metro area in the next five to six days, with heavier rain – up to 7 inches – possible to the south across central Georgia.
The National Weather Service warned that with the ground already saturated from several inches of rain this month, areas of flash flooding will be possible “if the heavy rain repeatedly moves over the same area.”
So far this year, 8.2 inches of rain has collected in the city’s official rain gauge at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a surplus of .82 inch. The rainfall total of 14.13 inches since Dec. 1 is 2.85 inches above normal for that period.
After a chilly Thursday morning with lows around the freezing mark, temperatures will moderate a bit the rest of the week.
Highs will be in the 50s Thursday and Friday and 60s Saturday and Sunday, with morning lows in the 40s.
