Georgia’s mild winter and spring gave state Department of Transportation crews and contractors a head start on the summer road construction season, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of projects underway between now and the fall.

David Spear, spokesman for the DOT, said there will be no fewer than 20 major projects underway this summer on Georgia’s interstate highways, many of them in metro Atlanta.

“Please be alert, cautious and patient when driving through project work zones,” DOT Commission Keith Golden said. “Our work is weather-dependent and can be time-consuming. We will complete it as quickly as possible.”

While roadwork has been suspended for the Memorial Day weekend, projects already underway or planned for later in the summer across metro Atlanta include:

• I-285 resurfacing from West Paces Ferry Road to Ashford-Dunwoody Road.

• Construction of collector/distributor lanes alongside I-20 between I-285 and Panola Road in DeKalb County.

• Six interchange reconstruction projects on the top-end Perimeter in Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb counties.

• Construction of a new I-85 interchange with Ga. 400 just north of downtown Atlanta.

• Resurfacing of I-75 in Bartow and Gordon counties.

• Interchange construction on I-575 at Sixes Raod and at Riverside Parkway in Cherokee County.

• Interchange reconstructions on I-75 at Jodeco and Jonesboro roads in Henry County
