A Dallas man has died of a single gunshot wound to the chest after a confrontation with Paulding County police Monday.
Douglas Scott Pilcher, 47, reportedly was armed with several weapons inside his home, threatened suicide and fired several shots at authorities before a Paulding County officer fired a shot back and wounded him.
Pilcher was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, according to Cpl. Brandon Gurley with the Paulding County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead there.
The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m. at a home on Sugar Maple Lane in the Seven Hills subdivision near Dallas. Piltcher was the only one at the home at the time of the incident, Gurley said.
A SWAT team arrived from Paulding County and negotiators made contact by telephone with the suspect, who had various firearms.
"It was a very tense situation," Gurley said.
The man exited the house and pointed a gun at an officer, and an officer fired one gunshot at the suspect. The deputy that fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, Gurley said.
The GBI was on the scene Monday evening to assist with the investigation.
Paulding County Sheriff's deputies remained in the neighborhood for hours to keep onlookers away.
The nearby Shelton Elementary School kept children at the facility nearly two hours before running its bus route through Seven Hills.
Pilcher had lived in the home since it was build in 2004.
