The Snellville City Council on Monday night postponed a vote on a proposed pawn shop to give the business owner more time to allay concerns of nearby residents.

Hill Top Pawn Shop owner Paul Slifko has been operating his business out of shopping center on Rawlins Street since 1994. He wants to relocate and build a 5,500-square-foot facility on 2.5 acres near U.S. 78 and Grayson Parkway.

He is seeking a conditional use permit, a requirement of pawn shops in Snellville.

But residents in the Summit Chase subdivision, which sits about 4,100 feet from the proposed site, objected to the plan in dozens of e-mails sent to council members over the past few days. Some didn't want a pawn shop close to their neighborhood, particularly a business with guns as a major selling item.

Slifko hopes to meet with residents next week at City Hall. The council is expected to vote on the matter at its next meeting April 12.
